Jordan, Barclay, Kate and Sarah all made their respective South Island training squads too after a very intense tournament a few weeks ago. Awesome effort to you all.

BOT Survey-A Safe and Protective Environment

Within the time I have been at Swannanoa School I have spoken with several parents in regard to playground incidents and events at school. I would like to on behalf of the BOT get an accurate picture from our wider community about how safe you feel our playground and classroom environment is. It is important that we get a good response to this survey as it will inform our resourcing and priorities for next year. To complete the survey click on the link below.

Music Lessons 2010

Music Lessons 2010

I have been approached by KBB music who are offering to run specialist music (a range of brass and string instruments) tuition and a regional orchestra at our school next year. Lessons are in groups of 4 at a cost of $16 per lesson, per student. Hireage of instruments can also be done through KBB for around $220-$450 per instrument (price varies according to the instrument). Lessons take place before school, after school and at times during school.

I am wanting some feedback on this. Please let me know what you think.

3 Quick Quotes to Start the Week

I really like the power of quotes. They can be a source of motivation, inspiration and reflection. Here are 3 great ones for you all to ponder:

"One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child." -- Carl Jung

"Every time you wake up and ask yourself, "What good things am I going to do today?," remember that when the sun goes down at sunset, it takes a part of your life with it." --Indian proverb

"Education would be much more effective if its purpose was to ensure that by the time they leave school every boy and girl should know how much they do not know and be imbued with a lifelong desire to know it." -- William Haley

Soil Experts

I had the pleasure of a visit from some Room 2 pupils this afternoon sharing some of their inquiry learning with me. I can honestly say I learnt a few things from their field trip report that were quite fascinating. Here they are with their work.

Champion Cricketers

Our Y5/6 Kiwi Cricketers were one of only 3 out 28 teams that went unbeaten at yesterday's tournament. Well done to you all, hopefully at least one black cap/fern amongst you!

The Fun Theory

This is an interesting video. Although not scientific I think of it in the context of our classrooms. How much more can we achieve when fun is involved?

National Standards Discussion

Some more interesting debate in regard to national standards. Read and leave your feedback.

John Hattie is an internationally renown researcher in the field of education. He hit the headlines earlier this year with his research that suggested class size doesn't matter.

The Inverse Power of Praise

Every parent and teacher needs to read this article (link below). Let me know what you think. Which camp do you sit in? I will share my views after I hear from some of you out there. My advice, connect what the research is saying and what you know from your own personal experience. This makes us wiser parents and teachers.

National Standards

The national standards are in the news today and are a hot topic with leaders in the education sector. I urge you all to think about what is important for your children. Coming to school should be much more than just reading, writing and mathematics. Providing a rich, creative and stimulating school is what I believe will make a difference to your child's learning and more importantly their lives. Literacy and numeracy will be a focus in our school as it already is. Literacy is the springboard to most other learning. I am committed to teachers collecting evidence of achievement and assessing how effective they are being when they analyse this information. I am also committed to giving parents honest, accurate and useful information in regard to their child's achievement.

One of the reasons that schools are so wary of the standards is the negative impact they have had in countries overseas. Please post a comment, but before you do you have to read these articles they puts things into context nicely:

Also, ask yourself these questions;

Why are the government doing this? Is it for the children or is it for votes?

There is no doubt that very few people would say no to whether we want to lift standards in education. But will the hasty introduction of standards do this?

Zac and Abby's Home Learning

I am always impressed when students apply what they learn at school in their own time at home. Here Zac and Abby have used the school's inquiry learning process to discover how to raise calves and make some profit from it. Budding entrepreneurs too.

Coffee Group Discussion

Welcome along to today's session. One of the best things about web 2.0 technology is that if you didn't make it you can still be involved in what went on. Try one of these cool web based learning activities to improve the recall and understanding of subtraction facts, something to appeal to any child:

Some Home Learning Help

Graphic organisers are used in classrooms to assist children to organise their thinking whether it be creative or linear. Check out the link below for some ideas. I know sometimes as part of our home learning tasks students are asked to review current events or review books amongst other things. Try using one of the tools at the site below as a fresh approach: Exploratree Thinking Guides

Curriculum Coffee Group-Wednesday, August 26, 2.20-3pm

The new curriculum and 21st century learning are no doubt terms you have heard before but need more clarification of. Over the coming term I am going to hold afternoon coffee groups in Room 8 on a Wednesday afternoon from 2.20pm until 3pm. This will be an opportunity for you to come in and learn about how education has changed and will continue to change for your children.

The sessions will be informal, I will aim to start discussion and hopefully gauge some of the things you think are important for your child in their education. My aim will be to provoke discussion so we may look at some of the more controversial issues facing education at the moment. I will also present any information requested whether it be about reading, technology, mathematics or anything else. We may also sample some of the technology being used in the classrooms (including web 2.0 tools such as blogs and wikis) so you are familiar with it. The content of sessions will be very much guided by the wants of the group.

Attendance is open to any parent/caregiver and we will do our best to cater for pre-schoolers if you have them with you. You don’t have to come every week, just when you can make it. I have chosen this time to work in with after-school pick up. Coming along to these sessions can and will make a difference to what happens at Swannanoa School so come along and learn more about what we do and where we want to head.

Great 'Read To' Titles

I love reading to children, both at school and in my own home. This is a great way to unwind and stimulate some quality interaction between you and your children, not to mention model fluent reading strategies!
Here are some of my favourite titles to read to children. The age appropriateness is in brackets.

The Hatchet and Mr Tucket by Gary Paulsen (9-13yrs), Danny Champion of the World by Roald Dahl (8-12yrs), Under the Mountain by Maurice Gee (8-13yrs), Deadly Prospect (11-13yrs) and Driving A Bargain (8-11yrs) by Fleur Beale, Charlotte's Web by E.B.White (6-10yrs), The Twits by Roald Dahl (6-10yrs).

For some fantastic sophisticated picture books (8-13yrs) check out any titles by Anthony Browne, Colin Thompson and Raymond Biggs.

I love to read Lynley Dodd, Grandma McGarvey and Dr Seuss books to youngsters (5-8yrs). Another lesser known author that is a favourite in our house is Lauren Child with her Lola series (5-8yrs).

Motivated to Learn

Shannon from R1 shared this little project with me today. Last year she did an enrichment task with her class teacher involving a range of self directed activities about shoes. This holidays she took it upon herself to create her very own original elf shoes. Well done Shannon for being a committed learner that can successfully apply what you have learned.
